Best Sailing Months: April to November

Cruising Area

Portugal’s coastline is best explored by venturing into its many rivers and estuaries. It is a great place to learn to sail as you can experience coastal trade winds, swells, currents, and fog, so there is a lot to learn on a practical course. If the weather is too much, the Bay of Lisbon has plenty to offer for the trainee skipper or crew. The Bay offers protection from the swells, excellent marinas to practice boat handling and the beautiful city of Lisbon to explore when you get ashore.

In the summer, when the temperatures mean you need cooling off, a lovely stop is the historic coastal town of Cascais with its beautiful beach in the heart of the town. A unique place to sail, it is particularly good for advanced sailing courses as you are guaranteed to experience conditions you might not get elsewhere.

Weather Synopsis

The northerly trade winds coupled with the occasional Atlantic swell can make this a challenging terrain. Fog can be experienced in the summer months. The Trades generally blow from midday to early evening.
