East Coast, UK

Best Sailing Months: April to October
Prevailing Wind: South West

Cruising Area

From the Wash down to the start of the Channel, the landscape is much flatter here but the beautiful rivers and estuaries make it an amazing experience. The East Coast is the home of many fishing smacks, gaffers and bawleys, and in the rally season, these beautiful wooden boats can be seen in all their glory. Excellent navigational skills are required and tidal calculations are a must, with many shallow banks to cross. The number of uncrowded anchorages make it ideal for exploring and enjoying the abundant wildlife. In contrast it offers the busy port of Ramsgate, with ferries and container ships galore, which all make for interesting and challenging pilotage experiences. Ipswich, on the River Orwell, with its historical waterfront is a beautiful city to visit, and there are marinas and moorings aplenty. Road and rail networks on the East Coast are excellent, being only an hour or so to the Capital.

….. and if this is not enough you are a short hop away from France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Weather Synopsis

The East Coastline offers some shelter from the prevailing wind. It is slightly cooler than the west but drier with less windfall and humidity.
