A comprehensive introduction to navigation and safety
The RYA Day Skipper theory course equips you with the theoretical knowledge to navigate in familiar waters by day. It also gives a basic introduction to the skills required for night cruising. The day skipper theory is a shore based course held in a classroom over a 5 day period, night classes or online. It covers navigational theory and navigational instruments, pilotage into harbours, tidal theory, meteorology, collision regulations (the rules of the road) and safety onboard. This course teaches you the knowledge required to then go on and complete the day skipper practical training.

Previous Experience Required
None, although it will be easier if you have completed the RYA Competent Crew course.
- The basics of seamanship
- The essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage
- Electronic charts
- Position fixing
- Plotting a course to steer
- Weather forecasting and meteorology
- Tides collision regulations
- Construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat
- Emergency and safety procedures including distress calls,use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and liferafts
Abilities gained after the course
On successful completion you will have enough theoretical knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. After passing you will gain the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Certificate.
