A short sailing course for beginners
The RYA Start Yachting course is run over 2 days. It is ideal as a short introduction for beginners who are not sure whether or not they will like sailing. It can also be used as a stepping stone towards the longer beginners course. Holders of the RYA Start Yachting Certificate can go on to complete the RYA Competent Crew course in a reduced time of 3 days.
This first step in what will hopefully become a long ladder of sailing experience is probably the most important. That is why the course gives the opportunity to steer the boat, hoist the sails and learn about safety onboard.
By the end of the course, you will feel comfortable being on a yacht and be ready to take the next step on a Competent Crew course. You will also have enough knowledge to go on a day sail with friends.
- Terminology, parts of the boat, her rigging & sails
- Ropework & tying knots
- Sailing on all points of sail
- Steering the yacht under sail & power
- Rules of the road & maintaining a lookout
- Basic meteorology
- Man overboard recovery
- Lifejackets, buoyancy aids and safety harnesses
- Emergency equipment & precautions
- Actions to be taken in event of an emergency, and an awareness of hazards on board the yacht
Abilities gained after the course
By the end of the course you will have experienced steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework and be aware of safety on board. Holders of the RYA Start Yachting Certificate can go on to complete the RYA Competent Crew course in a reduced time of 3 days or 2 weekends.
The RYA Competent Crew Course is the next step forward for further practical experience. If the bug has bitten you and you can see yourself taking your new interest further, then why not do a navigation theory course. Courses to consider are either the RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship or RYA Day Skipper theory.
